The drastic move comes after 40 people were killed in a series of weekend riots. Katherine Curtis joins us now to explain what_s going on. KC) Vic the violence was a response to an Egyptian court_s sentencing of 22 people to death for their involvement in a fatal 2012 soccer riot. Unfortunately President Morsi_s decision to call the state of emergency has exacerbated the situation leading to further angry demonstrations. The emergency measures are specific to the cities of Port Said Suez and Ismalia. However violence has spread nationwide including severe clashes between protesters and police in downtown Cairo.Although the court_s decision over the soccer riots is a new development the underlying issue has remained the same for months. KC) Vic activists believe Morsi is curbing personal freedoms to push through his Islamic agenda.VS) With the state of emergency only deepening the conflict what_s next for the president?KC) That_s the million dollar question. On Monday Morsi agreed to discuss the crisis even calling for a national dialogue with several of his opponents. The death toll stands at 230 people in the university city of Santa Maria. Although an investigation is still ongoing it appears a bandis pyrotechnics display is at least partly responsible for the deadly blaze.Israeli officials say theyid consider launching a pre-emptive military strike to prevent Syriais chemical weapons from falling into the wrong hands. With concerns over Syrian President Bashar al Assad losing control over the country Israel says it must ensure groups like Al Qaeda and Hezbolla are unable to benefit from the political instability. Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger warns that there could be a nuclear crisis in Iran in the ìforeseeable futurei. The Nobel Peace Prize winner warned that nuclear proliferation in Iran will severely increase the chances of atomic weapons being used in warfare and that the situation would be quote a turning point in human history.
