Over 7 million people are without power along the US eastern seaboard in the devastating wake of Hurricane Sandy. In New York City the storm is thought to be responsible for a massive blaze that destroyed at least 50 homes. The city_s subway system has also been ground to a halt n officials say it could take up to 4 days to drain the water out of the tunnels. But the most dramatic scenario played out near Central Park where the arm of a construction crane snapped dangling precariously in the air 90 stories up.New Jersey was especially hard hit. A levee broke flooding several towns. It_s estimated that up to a thousand people will need to be rescued. Atlantic City was devastated with the downtown streets becoming part of the Atlantic Ocean. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie tweeted about the damage to the Jersey shore saying quote ìThe devastation on the Jersey Shore is some of the worst we_ve ever seen.i Across the northeast 16 deaths have been blamed on Sandy and it_s projected that the wind damage alone could cost 7 billion dollars in economic loss.With blackout warnings still in effect along the mid-Atlantic coast U.S. and Canadian residents have been turning to their smartphones for up-to-the-minute hurricane reports - specifically through Twitter. So for those of you hooked up to the micro-blogging site here are some accounts to consider following. There_s the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which operates the areas three major airports. FEMA The National Weather Service and the Weather Channel are continuing to tweet storm updates every few minutes while NASA and the N.O.A.A. have been releasing new satellite images of Sandy_s path.
