Let_s jump right into today_s headlines.Barack Obama came out swinging against Republican nominee Mitt Romney in Tuesday night_s hotly-anticipated US presidential debate. In an about-face from their previous match-up the President spent much of the ninety minutes on the offensive challenging his opponent on the economy foreign policy and women_s issues. Marina Valmont was taking notes and joins us now with her analysis. Thanks Kat. Although it certainly wasn_t a trouncing most analysts believe Obama scored a clear victory over the former Massachusetts Governor. One particularly strong exchange had the president taking Romney to task for implying he used last month_s embassy attack in Libya for political gain. For his part Governor Romney attempted to hammer away at the President over the economy and America_s reliance on foreign oil. All in all it was a contentious debate with each candidate doing what needed to be done to energize their base. The last of the three presidential debates is set for Monday October 22nd in Boca Raton Florida and will focus on foreign policy. Kat? So how would you describe the mood in the Obama camp today? Very pleased Kat. More than anything they were looking to change the narrative of the past couple of weeks and slow down Romney_s momentum. And the President_s team feels he was able to pull this off. The next one should be a wild one thanks Marina. In health news U.S. investigators have raided a Massachusetts drug company that_s been linked to a recent outbreak of fungal meningitis. The move comes after 200 people in 15 U.S. states were hit with the illness as a result of contaminated pharmaceutical products. The FDA believes the outbreak stemmed from sterility issues at the New England Compounding Center in Boston. As a safety precaution the FDA is urging doctors to avoid prescribing any of the company_s products specifically its line of heart drugs and steroids. Also in the New England area the state of Maine fell victim to a rather unusual event on Tuesday: an earthquake Yes we kid you not. According to the U.S. Geological Survey it registered 4.6 on the Richter scale. Eila Adams has the story. Kat when you think earthquakes the northeastern state of Maine doesn_t typically come to mind. But sure enough the southern area of the state was rattled Tuesday night with tremors felt as far away as Massachusetts Connecticut and New York. And although there were no reported injuries residents reported a loud bang followed by several seconds of shaking. In fact many immediately assumed their furnaces had blown up. Needless to say Kat the 911 emergency system was flooded with calls back to you. Thanks Eila. Glad to hear nobody was hurt. And that wraps up our first look at the headlines. In the first hate crime case of its kind in the US 196 charges are being levied at 5 defendants in a shocking case of human cruelty. In 2011 4 mentally and physically disabled adults were found imprisoned in a Philadelphia boiler room with little to no food and water. Linda Ann Weston is accused of being a ringleader in a plot to steal their social security checks.US Attorneys have charged 3 European men with making and unleashing the Gozi (GO-zee) computer virus. Between 2005 and 2011 they claim that the virus retrieved banking information and stole over 50 million dollars. One man has pleaded guilty with the other 2 awaiting extradition.The FAA in the US is struggling to come up with an explanation for the electrical problems plaguing Boeing_s new Dreamliner jets. The global Dreamliner fleet has been grounded as engineers scramble to pinpoint the issue. The Dreamliners were grounded last week following a battery fire in Boston and previous incidents in Japan.And the US military has taken an important step forward on the gender equality front. Women are now allowed to participate in direct combat units. The policy shift will create a number of new jobs for female troops. Some experts are predicting that it will be the biggest most devastating storm to EVER hit the Eastern seaboard. Eila Adams has her eyes on the sky and joins us now with the latest. How bad does it look out there Eila?Not great Kat.Several states including New York New Jersey North Carolina Pennsylvania and Connecticut have declared emergencies shutting down schools and transportation services. Meteorologists are warning that Hurricane Sandy could develop into a super storm when it makes landfall. International flights into Boston Washington DC New York Philadelphia and other cities have all been canceled. The storm has already left 60 dead after tearing its way through the Caribbean. And rather than weakening as it approaches land it appears that Sandy is getting even stronger with sustained winds hitting 85 miles per hour. Making things potentially WORSE Kat the Frankenstorm is expected to collide with a winter storm AND a cold front.Now I understand the storm_s economic impact could be pretty significant as well Eila.BIG TIME Kat. The New York Stock Exchange is completely shut down. And for those of you into other forms of legal gambling so are the casinos in Atlantic City.That_s a LOT of money that isn_t changing hands. I understand that even the presidential election campaigns are being affected. That_s right. Both candidates have canceled stops in crucial swing states due to Sandy. Mitt Romney has pulled out of an engagement in Virginia while President Obama will miss an appearance in Ohio. The President is remaining in Washington so he can monitor the storm_s progress. He visited FEMA and promised Americans that the agency would respond big and respond fast in the wake of any serious damage. Many analysts are warning that in a worst-case scenario some people might be unable to reach polling stations on Election Day. That_s all for now Kat back to you.Thanks for those updates Eila. Speaking of the election with just a week to go it_s still anybody_s race In the battleground state of Ohio a CNNORC International survey has Obama with a 4-point lead over Romney. But another poll from the Ohio Newspaper Association has the candidates tied at 49-percent. That state_s 18 electoral votes could very well be the difference that swings the election one way or the other. The Romney camp is optimistic about their chances noting that they have momentum on their side. We_ll be right back.

And for you history buffs out there the tomb is believed to belong to the father-in-law of Phillip the Second of Macedon who was the father of Alexander the Great.50 years ago this month Kuwait became the first Arab state in the Gulf to draft a constitution and form a parliament. And to celebrate the Golden Jubilee the oil rich nation put on a record-breaking fireworks display. Kuwait spent over 20 million dollars on nearly 80-thousand fireworks that were all launched in an hour. The new 113th US Congress was sworn in on Thursday. With its first Hindu member its first openly bisexual member and its first female combat veterans - to name but a few - this is easily the country_s most culturally diverse Congress ever. But in many ways this new group will be dealing with many of same old problems left over from the old Congress. And as Rachelle Wilde is about to explain they_ll have their work cut out for them.Vic after being sworn in the first order of business for new Congress members will be to sign a crucial aid package for Superstorm Sandy victims. Voting on a bill for 60 billion dollars in rescue funding was delayed Tuesday night following heated negotiations on the fiscal cliff. Not surprisingly the delay infuriated representatives of storm-hit states including Republican governor Chris Christie of New Jersey. He basically lambasted House leader John Boehner for not alowing a vote on the bill. On top of that major spending issues such as raising the debt ceiling and massive budget cuts to federal programs loom on the horizon.RW) So lots on their plates Vic.VS) And that_s without touching on other hot button issues like gun control and immigration. We know this is a more diverse government but will it be any less divided than the 112th version of Congress?RW) That remains to be seen although there_s definitely optimism that all these new faces - more than 80 in all - will be more open to cooperation than the last group. Either way with such divisive issues on the docket in the next few weeks we_ll know soon enough. VS) That we will thank you Rachelle.

Welcome to Naked News I_m VS. UN officials say that forces on both sides of Syria_s brutal conflict have agreed to a cease-fire during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha. The government of Bashar al-Assad has tentatively agreed to the deal as have most opposition factions. The government has said that they will give their final answer later in the week. The UN is looking to use a possible cease-fire to negotiate an even longer halt to the violence in the war-torn country. The holiday - also known as the Festival of the Sacrifice - arrives on October 26th.Recently oil and gas company Saudi Aramco was subjected to one of the most devastating cyber-attacks on record. Now American officials are pointing the finger at Iran as being the likely culprit. MV has been following the latest developments and joins us now with a full report. What_s going on Marina. Vic the attack was carried out during an important Islamic holiday when 55-thousand Saudi Aramco employees stayed home. 3-quarters of the company_s PCs had data erased and replaced with a picture of a burning American flag. US Intelligence officials are now blaming Iran for being behind the attack and planting false evidence to direct investigators elsewhere. This isn_t the only cyber-attack that the US is blaming on Iran. They also accuse the Middle Eastern nation of being behind recent attacks on US Banks. And in Afghanistan an elite German Special Forces team has captured a key member of the Taliban. Mullah Abdul Rahman is believed to be behind suicide attacks on NATO fuel covoys. When he was captured it_s alleged that he had a classified list of targets that NATO wanted captured. Not surprisingly Rahman_s name was one of those on the list. He_s accused OF masterminding a fuel hijacking which resulted in a hundred civilian casualties when the tankers were hit by rockets. And Vic...he also would reportedly order suicide bombers to dress as women in burkas to elude security forces. Reason being the U.S. constitution requires the president to be sworn in no later than January 20th. But that fell on a Sunday this year a date typically not reserved for inauguration ceremonies. Nonetheless the event seemed anything but anticlimactic. In addition to Vice President Bidenis swearing-in Obama took a moment to lay out his second term mandate.RW) Shortly afterward Vic the President made his way to Statuary Hall for the traditional lunch with U.S. lawmakers.VS) A jam-packed day to be sure n and that wasnit even the end of it was it.RW) Not by a long shot Pennsylvania Avenue was crammed to capacity for the afternoonis Inauguration Parade which featured a number of floats marching bands military regiments and citizensi groups.VS) A proud day for all US citizens. KC) Vic at least five people were injured in three separate U.S. gun show incidents this past weekend. Authorities were called to events in North Carolina Indiana and Ohio after receiving reports of weapons being accidentally discharged. This comes mere days after President Obama outlined his new strategy to curb gun violence nationwide. Nearly two years after Dominique Strauss-Kahn was accused of sexually assaulting a New York City hotel cleaner the former IMF chief has decided to settle up. After lengthy negotiations chambermaid Nafissatou Diallo has agreed to a 1.5- million-dollar settlement in exchange for dropping all legal action against him. And former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has a new gig n contributor to CBS News. She made her first appearance on the networkis ìFace The Nationi on Sunday wasting no time in taking a pot-shot at President Obama. She said the President needs to work harder at uniting the nation in order to lead it.

In an about-face from their previous match-up the President spent much of the ninety minutes on the offensive challenging his opponent on the economy foreign policy and women_s issues. Marina Valmont was taking notes and joins us now with her analysis. Thanks Kat. Although it certainly wasn_t a trouncing most analysts believe Obama scored a clear victory over the former Massachusetts Governor. One particularly strong exchange had the president taking Romney to task for implying he used last month_s embassy attack in Libya for political gain. For his part Governor Romney attempted to hammer away at the President over the economy and America_s reliance on foreign oil. All in all it was a contentious debate with each candidate doing what needed to be done to energize their base. The last of the three presidential debates is set for Monday October 22nd in Boca Raton Florida and will focus on foreign policy. Kat? So how would you describe the mood in the Obama camp today? Very pleased Kat. More than anything they were looking to change the narrative of the past couple of weeks and slow down Romney_s momentum. And the President_s team feels he was able to pull this off. The next one should be a wild one thanks Marina. In health news U.S. investigators have raided a Massachusetts drug company that_s been linked to a recent outbreak of fungal meningitis. The move comes after 200 people in 15 U.S. states were hit with the illness as a result of contaminated pharmaceutical products. The FDA believes the outbreak stemmed from sterility issues at the New England Compounding Center in Boston. As a safety precaution the FDA is urging doctors to avoid prescribing any of the company_s products specifically its line of heart drugs and steroids. Also in the New England area the state of Maine fell victim to a rather unusual event on Tuesday: an earthquake Yes we kid you not. According to the U.S. Geological Survey it registered 4.6 on the Richter scale. Eila Adams has the story. Kat when you think earthquakes the northeastern state of Maine doesn_t typically come to mind. But sure enough the southern area of the state was rattled Tuesday night with tremors felt as far away as Massachusetts Connecticut and New York. And although there were no reported injuries residents reported a loud bang followed by several seconds of shaking. In fact many immediately assumed their furnaces had blown up. How bad does it look out there Eila?Not great Kat.Several states including New York New Jersey North Carolina Pennsylvania and Connecticut have declared emergencies shutting down schools and transportation services. Meteorologists are warning that Hurricane Sandy could develop into a super storm when it makes landfall. International flights into Boston Washington DC New York Philadelphia and other cities have all been canceled. The storm has already left 60 dead after tearing its way through the Caribbean. And rather than weakening as it approaches land it appears that Sandy is getting even stronger with sustained winds hitting 85 miles per hour. Making things potentially WORSE Kat the Frankenstorm is expected to collide with a winter storm AND a cold front.Now I understand the storm_s economic impact could be pretty significant as well Eila.BIG TIME Kat. The New York Stock Exchange is completely shut down. And for those of you into other forms of legal gambling so are the casinos in Atlantic City.That_s a LOT of money that isn_t changing hands. I understand that even the presidential election campaigns are being affected. That_s right. Both candidates have canceled stops in crucial swing states due to Sandy. Mitt Romney has pulled out of an engagement in Virginia while President Obama will miss an appearance in Ohio. The President is remaining in Washington so he can monitor the storm_s progress. He visited FEMA and promised Americans that the agency would respond big and respond fast in the wake of any serious damage. Speaking of the election with just a week to go it_s still anybody_s race In the battleground state of Ohio a CNNORC International survey has Obama with a 4-point lead over Romney. And as Rachelle Wilde is about to explain they_ll have their work cut out for them.Vic after being sworn in the first order of business for new Congress members will be to sign a crucial aid package for Superstorm Sandy victims. Voting on a bill for 60 billion dollars in rescue funding was delayed Tuesday night following heated negotiations on the fiscal cliff. Not surprisingly the delay infuriated representatives of storm-hit states including Republican governor Chris Christie of New Jersey. He basically lambasted House leader John Boehner for not alowing a vote on the bill. On top of that major spending issues such as raising the debt ceiling and massive budget cuts to federal programs loom on the horizon.RW) So lots on their plates Vic.VS) And that_s without touching on other hot button issues like gun control and immigration. We know this is a more diverse government but will it be any less divided than the 112th version of Congress?RW) That remains to be seen although there_s definitely optimism that all these new faces - more than 80 in all - will be more open to cooperation than the last group. UN officials say that forces on both sides of Syria_s brutal conflict have agreed to a cease-fire during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha. The government of Bashar al-Assad has tentatively agreed to the deal as have most opposition factions. The government has said that they will give their final answer later in the week. The UN is looking to use a possible cease-fire to negotiate an even longer halt to the violence in the war-torn country. The holiday - also known as the Festival of the Sacrifice - arrives on October 26th.Recently oil and gas company Saudi Aramco was subjected to one of the most devastating cyber-attacks on record. Now American officials are pointing the finger at Iran as being the likely culprit. MV has been following the latest developments and joins us now with a full report. What_s going on Marina. Vic the attack was carried out during an important Islamic holiday when 55-thousand Saudi Aramco employees stayed home. 3-quarters of the company_s PCs had data erased and replaced with a picture of a burning American flag. US Intelligence officials are now blaming Iran for being behind the attack and planting false evidence to direct investigators elsewhere. This isn_t the only cyber-attack that the US is blaming on Iran. They also accuse the Middle Eastern nation of being behind recent attacks on US Banks. And in Afghanistan an elite German Special Forces team has captured a key member of the Taliban. Mullah Abdul Rahman is believed to be behind suicide attacks on NATO fuel covoys. When he was captured it_s alleged that he had a classified list of targets that NATO wanted captured. Not surprisingly Rahman_s name was one of those on the list. He_s accused OF masterminding a fuel hijacking which resulted in a hundred civilian casualties when the tankers were hit by rockets. And Vic...he also would reportedly order suicide bombers to dress as women in burkas to elude security forces.
