Vic the US State Department says that they had no actionable intelligence to indicate that the attack in Benghazi was being planned. Initial reports had suggested that it was a spontaneous attack in response to an inflammatory US-made anti-Muslim video that appeared on YouTube. However the State Department is now calling this a carefully coordinated terrorist attack. State Department officials are scheduled to testify in front of Congress over their handling of the event. Back to you.hank you Marina. Notorious radical Islamic cleric Abu Hamza has pled not guilty to terror charges in a New York City courtroom. He_s facing 11 charges including conspiracy to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon. He_s also accused of hostage taking and trying to incite a holy war in Afghanistan. Hamza was extradited from the UK last week along with two men accused in the 1998 embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. Hamza appeared in court without the prosthetic hook he uses as a hand which was confiscated by US authorites. His trial will start in August 2013.There has been a surprising shift in American religious demographics. The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life is reporting that Protestants are no longer the majority in the United States. Let_s go now to Eila Adams who_s been following this story.Vic according to Pew in the past 5 years the number of Protestants in the US has declined from 53-percent to 48-percent. Further evidence of the decline in Protestants can be seen in the country_s government - there are no Protestants currently on the Supreme Court and only one of the 4 people on the Presidential tickets - President Obama - is a Protestant. It_s still the largest religious group in America followed by Catholicism. But the fastest growing group are unaffiliated. Nearly 20-percent of Americans do not identify themselves with any religious group at all. Vic these numbers are based on a telephone poll of nearly 3000 people. Back to the unaffiliated - that would include Atheists right?That_s part of it. With the country_s civil war death toll already topping 60-thousand Assad made it clear that the violence would continue as long as there was even one so-called terrorist left in Syria. Eila?EA) Kat in his first major speech in more than six months Syrian leader Bashar al Assad was greeted by cheers and applause at the Damascus Opera House. The President vowed to keep fighting Syrian rebel forces whom he referred to as murderous criminals. Assad offered up a peace plan that included a reconciliation conference new elections and a revised constitution. He spoke out against Western nations that have been supporting and funding opposition soldiers calling them Western puppets.EA) Kat Assad also cryptically added that his regime would quote negotiate with the master not with the slave. KC) It_s unfortunate Eila but this struggle is clearly nowhere near over. So how has the international community responded to the speech?EA) As you can imagine it hasn_t been very friendly. The US State Department says that Assad is detached from reality. And the European Union is sticking by its guns and claiming that Assad must step aside and allow for political transition. KC) Is there any chance this can be resolved with Assad staying in office?EA) It doesn_t look like it. The Syrian National Coalition - the group officially recognized by the US and EU - says they_ll accept nothing less than the President_s resignation. KC) And the beat goes on. Thanks very much Eila. Thanks for joining us I_m VS. Days after his shocking resignation the fallout from the affair of ex-CIA head David Petraeus continues. Late Monday FBI agents were seen carrying boxes and bags into the North Carolina house of Paula Broadwell the 40-year old biographer with whom the four-star general claims he had the affair. The scandal has raised major security concerns in Washington. According to The New York Times investigators found classified documents on Broadwell_s computer. Petraeus however denies giving her any inside access.There_s no question the impact of the Petraeus affair is being felt far and wide. The top US commander in Afghanistan is now being pulled into the investigation. General John Allen allegedly sent inappropriate emails to another woman at the heart of the scandal. Eila Adams has that part of the story. Vic General John Allen - the man in charge of US operations in Afghanistan - is being investigated for sending thousands of pages of emails to a Florida woman named Jill Kelly. Kelly a family friend of Petraeus went to the FBI early this summer after receiving a number of harrassing emails. The ensuing FBI investigation traced the emails to Paula Broadwell and ultimately exposed the Petraeus affair. It_s believed that Broadwell saw Kelly as a threat to her relationship with Petraeus although Kelly has not been romantically linked to the ex-CIA boss. The emails between Allen and Kelly are dated between 2010 and 2012. However Pentagon officials will not disclose if they were sexual in nature Vic or if they included any classified information. EIla wasn_t General Allen on the verge of being appointed NATO_s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe? And if so what happens now? Needless to say Vic that promotion_s on hold at the request of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. But if Allen is cleared of any wrongdoing in the investigation he_s expected to assume command in early 2013. Seems like a pretty big _if_ at this point. Plenty of intrigue to this story and it only seems to get more complex every day. Thanks very much Eila. In other news the man behind one of the world_s most popular anti-virus software brands is on the run. John McAfee (MAK-uh-fee) is the main suspect in the Belize shooting death of an American expatriate named Gregory Paul. Local authorities believe that McAfee shot Paul at his home in San Pedro Town after an argument turned ugly. McAfee had been living in Belize for some time now. The software company he founded was sold to Intel for 7 billion dollars in 2010. It_s been reported that McAfee had been spending his time in Belize experimenting with drugs and toying with an ever-expanding gun collection. We_ll be right back.

Hello everyone - I_m Laura Conner WELCOME to Naked News. We_re on the eve of a mammoth presidential election in the US and both candidates are doing everything they can to get some last minute votes. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair has been following the campaigns and she joins us now for a look at all the last minute running around. Laura with just one day to go both President Obama and Mitt Romney put on a full court press in order to gain votes in swing states. The candidates - and their spouses and running-mates - all have last minute stops in battleground states that include Ohio Iowa and Colorado. Both candidates are bringing out the star-power to try and influence voters - Obama will be appearing with Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z in Ohio while Romney will be at an event in New Hampshire with Kid Rock.As for who will win the latest numbers suggest it is literally anybody_s guess. The most recent CNNORC International poll has Obama and Romney in a dead heat with each getting support from 49-percent of likely voters. Eila Adams has been analyzing some numbers for us. What can you tell us Eila? As you just mentioned Vic it_s a dead heat and several other recent polls are showing similar results. In most cases no candidate leads the other by more than 3 points. However respected statistician Nate Silver claims that Obama has an 82-percent chance of winning. Silver gained prominence after the 2008 election when he correctly predicted the results in 49 out of 50 states.That_s pretty impressive but I take it not everyone is trusting Silver_s predictions.Well certainly not anyone on the CONSERVATIVE side of the equation. There are a NUMBER of sites that give a huge edge to Romney.We_ll certainly find out soon enough thanks EIlaVoters in the storm-ravaged state of New York may get a little extra time to head to the polls. The Board of Elections says that if less than 25 percent of registered voters turn out to the polls they may extend the voting deadline by an extra 24-hours. Organizers will make their final decision on election day. Meanwhile New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is urging power companies to make areas with polling stations a priority when it comes to restoring electricity. This comes on the heels of an announcement in New Jersey which allows residents to email their vote in if they can_t get to a polling station. We_ll have more news shortly back to you Laura.

President Barack Obama has announced a series of 23 executive actions in an attempt to curb the wave of gun violence blanketing the US. He also called on Congress to re-instate a ban on military-style assault weapons ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition and to approve universal background checks on anyone purchasing a gun of any kind. Those checks would include private sales auctions and even gun shows.Even before the President_s speech gun lobbyists had been voicing their displeasure over tougher gun rules. In particular the National Rifle Association which has released a controversial commercial aimed at the Presidentis family.For his part the President did not address the attack ad. Among the executive actions announced Wednesday was the nomination for a director for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. Obama is also directing more resources to be used for mental health issues and the causes and prevention of gun violence. Now here_s Laura Conner with what ELSE is in the news today.

That_s how the daughter of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt is describing her recent visit to North Korea with her father. On her blog Sophie Schmidt says her group had to leave their cellphones and laptops behind. Most of the events they attended felt staged and they had to be careful about what they said because everything was bugged. Google Sophie in North Korea to read more on her blog.Subway has responded to viral criticism that their famous footlong sandwiches aren_t actually 12 inches. The company says the term is a trademark and descriptive name not a measurement of length. And a married Utah woman is lucky to be alive after a giant boulder rolled down a nearby ridge and crashed through her house. 63-year old Wanda Danhalter was in bed when the massive rock slammed into her bedroom in the middle of the night. I_m Katherine Curtis you_re watching Naked News. Well as predicted the weather battered states of New York and New Jersey were hit with yet ANOTHER storm. This is the last thing they needed after the devastation caused by hurricane Sandy only a few days ago. And like its predecessor this latest nor_easter has done its fair share of damage. 60-mile-per-hour winds have brought down trees and power lines blacking out tens of thousands of more homes across the region. In addition to a number of evacuations hundreds of flights in and out of both states were cancelled leaving thousands of travelers stranded. To date nearly 100 thousand people have registered for emergency housing assistance n a number that_s expected to increase in the coming days. An analysis of the US presidential vote tally has shed some light on exactly how Barack Obama handily won Tuesday_s election. Though his margin of victory in the popular vote was slim Obama scored major victories in some key demographics. With more here_s Eila Adams. Kat president Obama proved to be the candidate of choice for women latinos African americans and younger voters. Obama garnered 55-percent of the female vote compared to just 44-percent for Mitt Romney. His support among the Latino and African American community was even more impressive where he scored 71-percent and 93-percent of votes respectively. And once again his support among younger voters helped put him over the top. 60-percent of voters between the ages of 18 and 29 submitted ballots for Obama Kat.Sounds to me like the Republican party has some major work to do. So where did most of ROMNEY_S support come from?Well he DID get most of the white vote Kat the problem is that_s a shrinking demographic and not enough of them showed up at the polls. 72% versus 74% in 2008. Yeah that IS a problem it_s surprising because just over a week ago it seemed like the Romney campaign had all the momentum. What happened?Well that depends on who you ask. But in terms of demographics as I said Romney simply wasn_t able to compete in several key groups: specifically African-Americans Hispanics and the largest of all women. In fact Romney trailed Obama with SINGLE women by a staggering 38 percent a statistic due in no small part to the Republican party_s heightened focus on issues like contraception and abortion. Other complaints from conservative strategists include Paul Ryan_s inability to vitalize the ticket and Hurricane Sandy_s domination of the news cycle in the final days of the campaign. Vic?Marina some businesses are expected to re-open on Wednesday as the region continues to count the cost of the super storm. One of those businesses is the New York Stock Exchange. It was closed for 2 consecutive days marking the first time that_s happened since 1888. JFK and Newark airports are set to re-open as well all be it for limited service.LaGuardia remains closed because it_s runways are still submerged under water. It_ll still take a few days before the New York Subway system is re-opened and millions of people across the northeast might have to wait a little longer for their power to be restored. The estimated cost of cleanup has ballooned to between 30 or 40 billion dollars.One of the worst hit areas was New Jersey. But as they struggle to recover their governor has found what some people think is an unlikely ally. Katherine Curtis has the story.Vic New Jersey_s bombastic governor Chris Christie has his plate full dealing with the after-effects of Sandy. He_s set to tour disaster areas with President Barack Obama. Christie who_s a very vocal supporter of Mitt Romney has had nothing but enthusiastic praise of the President over his handling of the disaster calling his support wonderful. But the state has a lot of work ahead of it. Christie called the devastation unthinkable while Newark mayor Cory Booker warned that they were going to have a quote challenging time ahead. Back to the President Kat I understand that Christie and Obama pretty much ignored the fact that there_s an election coming up in a week.That_s right - in Christie_s own words quote ...not once did he (the president) bring up the election... The effects of Hurricane Sandy are being felt elsewhere throughout the political arena. Though the election is just days away the storm has dominated the lion_s share of media coverage. It_s also derailed several campaign stops for both Mitt Romney and President Obama with Romney converting one rally into a storm relief event. To further complicate matters Sandy has thrown a wrench into Florida_s early voting process which could lead to a decrease in voter turnout along the eastern seaboard.
