This is your News Off The Top.British authorities have charged two ex-News of the World editors - Rupert Murdoch protege Rebekah Brooks and here_s the big one, David Coulson, the former aid to British PM, David Cameron, along with six others. They_ve all been charged for their roles in intercepting the communications of over 600 people.A list of the alleged victims will be released shortly, but it is thought to include big name stars such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Wayne Rooney, and Sir Paul McCartney. Five other senior tabloid journalists are being charged, as well as a private investigator whose detailed notes have been at the center of the scandal from day one.In other news today, an Afghan police commander and 13 junior officers have defected to join forces with the Taliban. This was in the western province of Farah, one of the most violent areas of the region. The men took valuable equipment and heavy weaponry - including rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, and a number of US-made armoured Humvees - with them. Intelligence officials say the police commander poisoned seven policemen who refused to defect. Over the past few years, Afghan forces had driven Taliban insurgents out of the area. But local sources say the terrorist group is regaining its foothold there. And we_ll finish up your first look at the headlines, stateside. American authorities have charged a young man with two counts of arson in connection to a fire that caused 400 MILLION dollars worth of damage to a US Navy submarine. 24-year old Casey James Fury is suspected of setting the blaze last May, and then attempting to spark a second fire last month.Fury was contracted as a painter and sandblaster aboard the USS Miami while it was docked for a major overhaul at a naval shipyard in Maine. Though he initially denied the charges, Fury later admitted to starting the fires. He told investigators he did it because he wanted to get out of work. If convicted of either charge he could face life behind bars Erica.I_d say he_s in BIIIIG trouble. What ever happened to calling in sick? Seriously. Burning your place of employment down? But some of Romney_s most prominent backers are promising big things. Senator and former candidate John McCain, and New Jersey governor Chris Christie, both say that Romney will shine in Wednesday_s debate in Denver. Christie even goes so far as to suggest that the race will be turned upside down. Meanwhile, Obama has been traveling with former candidate John Kerry, who_s acting as kind of a debate sparring partner. There_s a lot of hype surrounding this first debate Eila and it COULD end up determing who the next president is. I for one can_t wait I think this will be the most watched presidential debate EVER. Things might even get ugly. It_s certainly possible, both sides have accused the other of lying in their ads and Romney even stated that he_ll make sure to set the record straight on Wednesday MUST SEE TV for sure, thanks Laura.In other US political news, a new book claims that President Obama_s FAMILY is costing taxpayers 20 times more than the British Royal Family According to Robert Keith Gray_s Presidential Perks Gone Royal, Obama_s family costs taxpayers 1-point-4 billion dollars a year. That_s around 6 dollars and 50 cents per taxpayer. There_s the secret service, of course, and the cost of taking Air Force One on the campaign trail n which is required. Gray n a Republican activist who_s worked with several GOP Presidents - claims that Obama has 226 staffers who make over 100 thousand dollars a year. But he also mentions various perks the family enjoys. For example, the White House has a movie theatre that_s staffed 24 hours a day.The Supreme Court_s newest term starts On Monday and there are a LOT of high-profile cases that they_re scheduled to hear. Whitney St. John has been scrutinizing their agenda and joins us now with the highlights. Whitney?Eila, one of the cases is Fisher v. University of Texas n which challenges the school_s affirmative action policy. If the court rules against the school, it could have wide-ranging effects on the admission policies of schools across the country. Gay marriage should be another big issue, with cases about the Defense of Marriage Act and California_s Proposition 8 in the pipeline. This term, all eyes will be on Chief Justice John Roberts. The typically-conservative Roberts voted in favor of Obamacare, and analysts will be watching to see if he shows signs of any other against-type rulings. EA) An amazing collection of comic books recently sold for 3 and a half million dollars at auction in New York City. The collection belonged to the late Billy Wright of Virginia. One of his relatives was going through his belongings when they stumbled upon a stack of 345 comics in his basement. RW) And WHAT a find indeed Amongst them was an Action Comics number one from 1938, featuring the very first appearance of Superman. That one sold for 299-thousand. Wright also had Detective Comics number twenty-seven - AKA the first appearance of Batman That comic sold for 523-thousand dollars. And there_s your proof that comic book collecting is more than just a hobby - it_s an investment 2. EA) Is your iPhone_s FaceTime feature having a negative impact on your self-esteem? According to Washington DC-based plastic surgeon, Doctor Robert Sigal (SEE-gull) it most certainly is. He says he_s seen a major rise in patients seeking facelift surgery because they don_t like how they look when they use the video chat feature of their phones. RW) He_s calling it the Facetime Facelift effect. Sigal (SEE-gull) specializes in cosmetic procedures that_ll help keep you looking your best during video chats. EA) Now for an epic story of TINY proportions The Guinness Book of World Records has just confirmed a 72-year old Nepalese man as the shortest person EVER recorded Chandra Bahadur Dangi (CHAN-dra ba-ha-DOOR DAHN-gee) is just 21 and a half inches tall So why_d it take so long for him to be discovered?RW) Probably because Dangi is from a remote mountain village in Nepal, 250 miles west of Katmandu. A contractor noticed him in the village and brought the story to local media. He has five average-size brothers and no one in his family really remembers exactly when he stopped growing. Tuesday was a busy night in US politics with 3 important GOP primaries taking place.PP) And no one is more thrilled today then Mitt Romney. He had quite the night - going 3 for 3.RW) Eila Adams was watching, and joins us now in the newsroom with the latest.EA) Thanks ladies, it was a clean sweep for Mitt Romney He won all three primaries held Tuesday night: Maryland, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.The victories give Romney more than half of the delegates he needs to clinch the Republican nomination for president. Just as important, it widened the gap between him and his GOP rivals. But his closest competitor, Rick Santorum, said he had no intention of backing down. He_s going to push hard to narrow the gap in the 5 primaries being held on April 24th, including his important home state of Pennsylvania.In other news, parts of Texas are reeling after several huge tornadoes touched down in the Dallas area. According to the National Weather Service, between 6 and 13 twisters hit, destroying hundreds of homes and vehicles. One twister was so powerful that it picked up tractor-trailers and threw them around like toys. Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after the extreme weather damaged over a hundred planes. Amazingly, no fatalities have been reported. The recently-freed Columbian hostages have opened up about the ordeal they lived through for over 10 years. The 6 police officers and 4 soldiers say the Farc rebels had them in chains for years - often chained to each other. Two of the hostages managed to escape into the jungle, but after a month of wandering around lost they were recaptured. Doctors have examined the hostages and say that they are all in relatively good health. It_s unknown how many hostages that guerillas still hold, but it_s believed to be at least 100. After three weeks of agony and embarassment for the league, the NFL has finally reached a deal with the referees. Let_s get right to that story with Vic and Peyton in the naked newsroom. Here_s the story. It_s officially OVER The NFL and the referees_ union have reached a tentative eight-year deal. The new agreement will see the average salary for officials rise from 149-thousand dollars a year to 173-thousand in 2013. Officials will also get to keep their current pension plan, which was originally a major sticking point in negotiations.The union will ratify the deal over the weekend in Dallas. It will require approval from 51-percent of its 121 members. But that_s just a formality. The regular officiating crews will be back in action on Thursday night for the Cleveland-Baltimore game.In other news, a major figure in the US military is facing a number of charges that include sexual misconduct. Brigadier General Jeffrey Sinclair allegedly violated a number of military laws, the most glaring of which being forcible sodomy. Sinclair is the former commander of the Army_s 82nd Airborne Division, one of the most highly-decorated and revered units in the military.Sinclair allegedly had numerous inappropriate relationships with female colleagues during his time in Afghanistan. He was relieved of duty there in May and has since been stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Sinclair, a 27-year veteran, now faces the military equivalent of a grand jury. The presiding judge will determine whether he will face court martial on the charges. Mexican security forces claim they_ve captured yet another drug lord. Ivan Velazquez Caballero, aka El Taliban and Z-50 n had been a commander with the notorious Zetas drug gang. Velazquez was known for his brutality, and controlled some of the most important drug routes between the US and Mexico. He had a reward of 2-point-3 million dollars for his capture. PP and NO are standing by with your NEWS Off The Top PP) Thanks Rachelle, as if things weren_t already bad ENOUGH in Syria, they may be about to get dramatically worse.NO) And it all has to do with ONE country that_s blocked any and all attempts at resolving the crisis.PP) And that country is Russia Here_s what_s going on. 1. PP) U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton says that Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syria. The shipment isn_t bound for the rebels either - they_re being sent to forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad_s (bah-SHAHR ahl ah-SAHD) regime. Clinton warns that if the shipment goes ahead, the situation with rebels in the embattled nation could get quote dramatically worse.NO) The shipment could end any hopes of a peace agreement. Western countries had hoped that Russia and China would agree to a plan that would end the Assad regime. Russia and Syria have had a long-term military relationship - Syria is home to Russia_s only Mediterranean naval base. But get this, Moscow stresses that the helicopters aren_t meant to attack Syrian rebels.2. NO) The US is going to be significantly increasing its naval presence in the Asia-Pacific. In a policy unveiled by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, 60-percent of the US Naval fleet will be sent to Pacific waters by 2020. This is part of a plan outlined by the Obama administration to beef up their presence in the region.PP) The administration feels that they need more presence in the Pacific based on Asian economic growth, and China_s rapid rise as a military force. Some of the Navy_s most advanced weaponry will be deployed including state of the art fighter planes and Submarines. 3.NO) On Wednesday one of the biggest changes will occur to the internet since its inception. It_s gTLD Reveal Day, a day when even more top-level domain names are revealed. You may know domains like dot-com and dot-net. But ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - received over 19-hundred applications for new ones - at 185-thousand dollars a popPP) For example, search giant Google has applied for dot-google, dot-youtube, and dot-lol. This could vastly expand the web and change the way people search and how companies brand themselves on-line. Right now, there are only 22 suffixes, and ICANN could reveal hundreds more. But critics say these new domains could provide a significant disadvantage or cost to some companies. And that_s your first look at the news. A joint United Nations-Arab League conference is going on right now in Baghdad, marking the first international conference hosted in Iraq in decadesRW) They_ve come a long way haven_t they. So what_s this meeting all about? VS) The one thing that_s dominated the news over the last few months, Syria and how to resolve what_s going on there. RW) No easy feat that_s for sure. VS) And it_s being made even MORE difficult because a number of explosions went off near the secure Green Zone in Baghdad as the conference kicked off. But everything seems to be going ahead as planned. Welcome to the newsroom everyone. VS) Arab leaders have gathered to discuss the UN-proposed peace plan that would bring an end to the violence in Syria. While the summit is no doubt a milestone for Iraq, expectations on what will actually be accomplished there remain low. Less than half of the 22 Arab League country leaders have shown up, with most choosing to send envoys instead. Security is so high that the location for the talks was only recently revealed to journalists. Staging the event has come at a steep price. Iraq is shelling out an estimated 500 million dollars. To Europe now, where a massive general strike has brought Spain to a standstill. Tens of thousands of workers from the country_s biggest unions protested government-proposed labour reforms. On Friday the Spanish government will unveil a plan for budget cuts it believes will help it save of billions of dollars. Spain has Europe_s highest unemployment rate, at 23 percent. And with the country tipping into its second recession since 2009, another million workers are expected to join unemployment lines this year alone. And in Colorado, a deadly wildfire has blazed its way across 4-thousand acres of land, destroying 27 homes in its path. As well, hundreds of people had to be evacuated in the Buffalo Creek region. What was supposed to be a controlled burn by the Colorado State Forest Service to reduce vegetation spiraled out of control on Monday, when high winds blew embers across a containment line. 400 firefighters from several states are working to subdue the blaze. But a win is a win, and Romney was quick to thank his supporters at a rally late Tuesday night.Things were a little easier for Romney in Arizona, where he beat Santorum by a 47 to 27 percent margin. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich didn_t actively campaign in either of the two states, choosing instead to focus their attention on next week_s Super Tuesday primaries. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair will much more from the campaign trail a little later in our Power Play segment. Elsewhere in the US, severe weather including a series of tornadoes RIPPED through a number of states late Tuesday and early Wednesday. At least 7 people have died including 3 in Harrisburg, Illinois. Hundreds of others have been injured through out Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. And it appears that the worst may be yet to come. For more we_ll turn things over to Rachel Simmons.RS) Natasha the storms that ripped through the mid-west wreaked havoc on houses, trees, and power lines, leaving many people trapped in their homes. Kansas governor Sam Brownback declared a state of emergency for the tiny town of Harveyville, which was hit particularly hard by the violent conditions. The National Weather Service has issued an ominous tornado watch for other states including Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee, warning of massive hailstones, dangerous lighting, and lashing 75 mile per hour winds. RS) In other US news, it_s being called the largest health care scam in American history. A Canadian-born doctor based in Texas has been charged with orchestrating a scam that saw him sign up thousands of patients to healthcare programs they never really needed. Authorities say that Medicare and Medicaid have been swindled out of approximately 375 million dollars between 2006 and 2011. 54-year old Dr. Jacques Roy and six others have been charged with Roy facing up to 100 years in prison. Roy_s practice had over 11-thousand patients - more than any other in the country. The federal government has suspended payments to 78 other home health agencies while it continues its investigation, back to you Nat.NO) I_m not sure what_s more surprising Rachel- that he thought he could get away with it, or that he got away with it for as long as he did I mean how could one doctor POSSIBLY serve so many patients?RS) It_s crazy right? The feds say it_d take 30 VERY busy medical centers to serve that many people. Apparently Roy would send recruiters to homeless shelters and get people to sign up to the scheme, giving them fifty bucks a pop. In other news, a Montreal high school teacher has come under fire for showing his grade 10 students the infamous alleged murder video of Luka Magnotta victim Jun Lin (ZHUN LIN). The teacher held a vote, in which students were overwhelmingly in favor of seeing the footage. After watching the horrific tape, the history and civics class spent 75 minutes discussing it. The teacher was suspended that afternoon and could face further disciplinary action from the school board and even police. Lin_s severed body parts were put in the mail and delivered to various political parties and elementary schools across Canada. Although many of us haven_t noticed, the US government has been quietly beefing up its border security overseas. So far, 14 countries are participating in an unprecedented new program that gives Homeland Security agents the authority to screen passengers at foreign airports. This allows them greater control over who_s allowed clearance to enter the US. To date, 500 people have been turned away after being deemed national security risks. If you_ve got a teen at home, you MIGHT want to keep an eye on what they_re doing with their phones A new study says that nearly a THIRD of teens have texted naked pictures of themselves. Not only that, but well over half have been pestered to send the saucy snaps. Did they learn NOTHING from Anthony Wiener? The study goes on to show that teens who are willing to engage in sexting are more willing to actually go all the way. And teen girls who sext were also more likely to use drugs and alcohol.Speaking of photos, those friends who post pictures of you on Facebook might not be very good friends at all. In a poll of 15-hundred women, 25-percent admit that they_ve posted unflattering photos of their BFFs on purpose One in 3 say they did it because the friend did it to them first. Most of the rest say it was because they_d had a bit of a falling out with the friend in question. In Libya, four Americans, including US Ambassador Christopher Stevens, have been killed in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.And believe it or not this was all caused by by a controversial film. Let_s send you over to the NakedNews where Vic and Kat have the story. Infuriated by a US-produced film that mocks Islam and the Prophet Mohammed, armed men stormed the US consulate in Benghazi. Stevens and the 3 others were killed by a rocket attack. The killings were condemned by both US President Obama and Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagur.Similar protests also targeted the US embassy in Egypt, where the American flag was torn apart. Security has been beefed up at US Embassies around the world in the wake of the protests. The film in question, titled Innocence of Muslims, was produced by California real-estate developer Sam Bacile, who has since gone into hiding.At least 261 people are dead after fires swept through two factories in Pakistan. In the worst of the two in Karachi, 236 lives were claimed as flames ripped through a garment factory. One survivor claims that grills on the windows prevented people from escaping, and that anyone who complained about safety in the past were fired.The owners of the garment factory fled, prompting a police man hunt to find them. Meanwhile in Lahore, 25 workers perished after a suspected generator malfunction sparked a fire. A gate prevented workers from leaving. The blazes have prompted a government inspection of all factories and plants in the province within 48 hours.The US is asking for a calm, diplomatic resolution in the dispute between Japan and China over a chain of islands. China has sent two patrol ships to the East China Sea to keep an eye on the islands, which both countries lay claim to. Last week, Japan finalized a deal to purchase the islands from their private owner, a move that isn_t sitting well with Beijing.The US won_t take sides in the dispute, but is asking for cooler heads to prevail. Diplomats say that the region is the cockpit of the global economy and that it_s imperative to maintain peace. The islands are desirable because they_re located in a major shipping lane, and are also near suspected gas deposits.And that_s your first look at today_s NAKED news everyone.
