US authorities say the charges are bogus and insist Abedini is simply being prosecuted for his religious beliefs. ES) Prince Harry killed a number of Taliban insurgents during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. Two early polls indicated that Obama had gotten the better of his opponent but there_s no question this was a hotly contested debate Vic.Absolutely. Welcome to the newsroom everyone.Both former Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama went on the offensive Monday night. Romney was quick to criticize the President over perceived American weakness on the international stage particularly when it comes to Iran and the Middle East. The two tangled over what Romney has labeled the Obama Apology Tour during the President_s first year in office. Another key exchange came while debating military spending where Romney criticized Obama for having a navy smaller than at any time since 1917. However a full term in office showed that experience was on the President_s side. Whenever possible Romney shifted the argument back to the American economy stressing his five-point plan as the key to kickstarting growth. Both men had their say and now the rest is up to the voters. The American public goes to the polls on November sixth.On the international scene Russia has ruffled some feathers by accusing the US of a double standard when it comes to human rights. On Monday Russia_s lower parliament held a three-hour hearing that criticized the Obama administration_s failure to close down the Guantanamo Bay prison as well as the continued use of the death penalty in some states. Relations between the US and Russia have been noticeably more frigid since Vladimir Putin announced his plans for another term as President.Some of the acrimony comes from a new bill proposed by Congress that would have the US government place sanctions on human rights abusers with Russia being near the top of that list. In recent weeks presidential candidate Mitt Romney has even referred to Russia as Washington_s number one geopolitical adversary. We_ll cap off our first look at the headlines with a surprising ruling out of Italy. Six scientists have been convicted of manslaughter for failing to predict the devastating 2009 earthquake that leveled the city of L_Aquila. The city_s court has sentenced the scientists and one government official to six years behind bars for not giving accurate warnings of the quake_s potential impact.The court_s decision hinged on evidence from a meeting held days before the earthquake. The scientists concluded it was unlikely the quake would strike despite worries from local residents. Italian authorities have also been ordered to pay 10 million dollars in damages. Seismologists around the globe have expressed their shock and dismay at the ruling saying it sets a precedent that could severely hinder scientific research going forward.It_s a shame what happened there but I can_t say I agree with the decision Erica. If scientists are afraid to speak their minds couldn_t that lead to even bigger disasters in the future?That_s exactly the argument they_ve been making. While the US and UK have acknowledged support for the coalition they_ve yet to recognize them as a government in exile. But French President Francois Hollande made his country_s stance official at a televised news conference in Paris. He called the coalition quote ìthe future government of a democratic Syria allowing it to bring an end to Bashar al-Assad_s regime.A student from Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to life in prison for plotting to attack the home of former US President George W Bush. Khalid Aldawsari was arrested last year after the FBI raided his apartment finding bomb-making materials. His list of targets also included hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants. Experts say he had obtained enough ingredients to construct a bomb similar to the ones used in the 2005 attacks on the London subway system. It starts in the South Pacific where the Philippines has signed an historic peace plan with its largest rebel group the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The deal will put an end to 40 years of fighting that has claimed an estimated 120 thousand lives. Senior anchor Victoria Sinclair has the story. Thanks Kat. Under the terms of the agreement an autonomous Muslim region called Bangsamoro will be set up in the south of the mostly Catholic country. Further challenges lie ahead mind you. The peace plan is considered a framework meaning both parties have until the end of the year to hammer out the specific details. A senior arbitrator summed up the historic moment saying quote The time has come for us to choose the moral high ground. After four decades peace is within reach.Although the U.S. has long been credited for placing tough economic restrictions on Iran the E.U. is now stepping up to the plate. Foreign Ministers from several European nations are descending on Luxembourg to announce a fresh round of sanctions against the Middle Eastern state. With more here_s Laura Connor. Victoria diplomats say the sanctions will place even heavier constraints on trade banks oil and natural gas imports with exceptions only being made in the case of medicine and other humanitarian aid. Previous rounds of international sanctions have already caused Iran_s currency - the rial- to lose 80 percent of its value since the beginning of this year. Because of this analysts believe Iran will be under insurmountable pressure to scrap its controversial nuclear program. And in Afghanistan authorities destroyed a massive haul of illegal narcotics. 24 tons of heroin hashish opium and alcohol were set ablaze outside of Kabul. And although this represents one of the country_s largest amounts of contraband even more impressive is the amount of accompanying arrests. A staggering 907 suspects have been detained in connection with the seizure. Afghanistan has long been one of the world_s largest drug producers Vic accounting for over 90 percent of all Opium production. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sounded alarm bells by acknowledging that an Israeli ground offensive is an option if necessary. The UN Security Council held an emergency session late Wednesday where officials called for maximum restraint. Over to Asia now where China_s government has finally made its long-awaited transition of power. Xi Jinping is now officially the face of Chinese leadership. Peyton Priestly joins us with the story. Vic after a decade of unprecedented economic growth Chinese President Hu Jintao (WHO jin-TOW) handed the torch to Xi Jinping (SHE JIN PING) as the new head of the Chinese Communist Party. Following a ceremony in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Mr. Xi and the six other members of China_s Standing Committee pledged to make China even stronger than it is today. The new leadership will gradually take control over the next few months Vicwith Hu Jintao_s presidency formally ending next March.It_s a very interesting peak into their somewhat secretive regime Peyton. Now I understand that standing Committee you spoke about was cut down from 9 to 7 members. Is there any sort of significance to that? There is actually. For one it should make it easier for the government to reach concensus on important decisions. And unlike China_s last two presidents Xi Jinping will also have control of the military. Many observers are calling it a major consolidation of power.It_s certainly the dawn of a new era and let_s hope it_s for the better. Now you_ve also been tracking a positive development over in Myanmar What_s happening over there? That_s right Vic just days before a historic visit from US President Barack Obama Myanmar_s (me-AHN-mar) government has released 452 prisoners under amnesty as a gesture of good will. The move is a sign of the many democratic reforms taking effect over there since the country_s current administration took office in 2010. Many of those being released were political prisoners or foreign nationals. Myanmar_s adoption of democratic policies has led to the loosening of sanctions from the international community. During his visit President Obama will meet with Myanmar President Thein Sein and activist icon Aung San Suu Kyi. Back to you Vic. Thanks Peyton. Kat the various factions that have fled Syria met in Qatar and voted on a new leader. His name is Moaz al-Khatib and he_s a Sunni cleric who initially fled the war-torn country several months ago after being detained by the government on numerous occasions. The opposition has been under a lot of international pressure to unite particularly from the US. Al-Khatib says now that the factions have come together as a united front it_s time for the international community to make good on its offers of aid. Opposition forces aren_t the only thing occupying the Syrian government_s attention these days. Israel has fired warning shots into the country following a pair of Syrian mortar attacks. The mortars landed in the Golan Heights region n a Syrian territory that_s occupied by Israel. No damage or injuries were reported by Israel in the attacks. However on Monday Israel confirmed a direct hit on Syrian artillery units. Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak warned that any additional strikes will result in a tougher response. Kat this marks the first time Israel has fired on Syrian forces since 1973. Karima El Mahroug will take the stand over accusations that the former Italian Prime Minister had sex with her in 2010 when she was 17 years old. Although both parties deny the relationship investigators say Berlusconi paid nearly 10 thousand dollars for her services.The Kumbh Mela festival has kicked off in India where tens of millions of people descended into the Ganges and Yamuna ya-MOO-na rivers to cleanse their sins. Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has finally gotten a chance to tell his side of the story.After nearly 13 years on the run Karadzic is facing 10 charges of genocide. This is your News off The Top.Karadzic is primarily standing trial for his role in the Srebenica Massacre - a widescale execution that killed 8-thousand Muslim men during the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990_s. During his first day of defense Karadzic denied the charges and claimed to be a tolerant man who had only wanted peace.He also said he did everything he could to reduce pain and human suffering during the war. He_s accused the media of exaggerating the number of casualties during the conflict. Authorities finally caught up with Karadzic in 2008 where he had been hiding in plain sight for the last 13 years. If convicted of the charges he could face life behind bars. More now from the fallout of last month_s terrorist attack on the American embassy in Libya. The assault killed a US ambassador and has become a hot topic in the US Presidential election. Republican candidate Mitt Romney has been quick to criticize Barack Obama_s foreign policies. On Monday Secretary of State Hilary Clinton deflected some of the blame by taking responsibility for the incident. Clinton went on to say that she didn_t want to get into any blame game and that the focus should now shift to tracking down the terrorists and bringing them to justice. Nevertheless political experts believe the Benghazi attack will dog the Obama administration for the duration of the campaign. We_ll finish up this first look at the headlines with some surprising political news out of Israel. Parliament there has voted unanimously to dissolve itself and hold an early general election next January. That_s almost a year earlier than expected.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for early elections last week mainly because his government was unable to pass a key budget bill which in turn would have resulted in unpopular spending cuts. Pundits expert a vicious 100-day election campaign and consider Netanyahu an overwhelming favorite to stay in office. There_s a lot to like about Netanyahu_s leadership. Israel_s economy has remained strong and he_s taken tough stances on foreign policy. The new troops are a mix of Marines and Army troops who were already serving in the US Central Command_s theatre of operations which stretches from Egypt up to Kazakhstan. This new deployment brings the total of US forces protecting diplomatic figures in Iraq up to 820. Apple is denying that its iCloud servers were breached in the massive leak of celebrity nude photos over the weekend. The company issued a statement saying it had spent more than forty hours investigating the issue and says celebrity accounts were hacked by targeting user names passwords and security questions. After spending thirty years behind bars DNA evidence has prompted the release of two men in North Carolina. Mentally disabled half-brothers Henry McCollum and Leon Brown were convicted on rpg and murder charges in 1984. It wasn_t until recently that DNA samples from the crime scene implicated another man already serving jailtime for a similar crime. Attorney Ken Rose said it_s quote impossible to put into words what these men have been through and how much they have lost. That_s a HUGE jump from the 174-thousand dollar a year salary he was earning as a member of CongressAnd another dispute over in-flight leg room has forced a THIRD US flight to be diverted THIS WEEK This time it was on a Delta Air Lines flight from New York to Florida. An argument broke out between a woman looking to recline her seat and another woman seated behind her who was trying to sleep on her tray table. One of the ladies became loud and abusive and the pilot landed the plane at the nearest possible airport out of what the airline calls an abundance of caution. Only one of the passengers was removed by law enforcement.

He_s hell-bent on tracking down a terrorist who tortured him during a mission years ago. With the help of a young protege played by Anton Yelchin Lake_s last mission takes him on an intercontinental journey where it seems everyone has something to hide.There_s been a lot of controversy behind the scenes with this film. It was written and directed by Paul Schrader who famously penned Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. That sounds promising but Schrader came out last month to say the project had been taken away from him and completely re-edited without his input. The whole thing has turned into a real mess. Dying of the Light is in theatres and available On Demand. Next up we have By The Gun a crime drama starring Ben Barnes as Nick Tortano. He_s an ambitious street-smart kid who_s grown up idolizing Boston mobsters. He_s eager to live the gangster lifestyle and jumps at the chance to do some of the mafia_s dirty work. Over time Nick proves himself to be a loyal soldier and gains the trust of the big boss played by Harvey Keitel. That_s when his dream finally comes true: he_s sworn in as a made man. Of course it_s not long before Nick realizes that being a made man isn_t all it_s cracked up to be. Soon he finds himself desperate to escape his life of crime. By The Gun doesn_t exactly redefine the gangster genre but manages to hit most of the right notes. It_s also in theaters now and available On Demand

Romney was quick to criticize the President over perceived American weakness on the international stage particularly when it comes to Iran and the Middle East. The two tangled over what Romney has labeled the Obama Apology Tour during the President_s first year in office. Another key exchange came while debating military spending where Romney criticized Obama for having a navy smaller than at any time since 1917. However a full term in office showed that experience was on the President_s side. Whenever possible Romney shifted the argument back to the American economy stressing his five-point plan as the key to kickstarting growth. Both men had their say and now the rest is up to the voters. The American public goes to the polls on November sixth.On the international scene Russia has ruffled some feathers by accusing the US of a double standard when it comes to human rights. On Monday Russia_s lower parliament held a three-hour hearing that criticized the Obama administration_s failure to close down the Guantanamo Bay prison as well as the continued use of the death penalty in some states. Relations between the US and Russia have been noticeably more frigid since Vladimir Putin announced his plans for another term as President.Some of the acrimony comes from a new bill proposed by Congress that would have the US government place sanctions on human rights abusers with Russia being near the top of that list. In recent weeks presidential candidate Mitt Romney has even referred to Russia as Washington_s number one geopolitical adversary. We_ll cap off our first look at the headlines with a surprising ruling out of Italy. Six scientists have been convicted of manslaughter for failing to predict the devastating 2009 earthquake that leveled the city of L_Aquila. The city_s court has sentenced the scientists and one government official to six years behind bars for not giving accurate warnings of the quake_s potential impact.The court_s decision hinged on evidence from a meeting held days before the earthquake. The scientists concluded it was unlikely the quake would strike despite worries from local residents. Italian authorities have also been ordered to pay 10 million dollars in damages. Seismologists around the globe have expressed their shock and dismay at the ruling saying it sets a precedent that could severely hinder scientific research going forward.It_s a shame what happened there but I can_t say I agree with the decision Erica. If scientists are afraid to speak their minds couldn_t that lead to even bigger disasters in the future?That_s exactly the argument they_ve been making. Khalid Aldawsari was arrested last year after the FBI raided his apartment finding bomb-making materials. His list of targets also included hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants. Experts say he had obtained enough ingredients to construct a bomb similar to the ones used in the 2005 attacks on the London subway system. Under the terms of the agreement an autonomous Muslim region called Bangsamoro will be set up in the south of the mostly Catholic country. Further challenges lie ahead mind you. The peace plan is considered a framework meaning both parties have until the end of the year to hammer out the specific details. A senior arbitrator summed up the historic moment saying quote The time has come for us to choose the moral high ground. After four decades peace is within reach.Although the U.S. has long been credited for placing tough economic restrictions on Iran the E.U. is now stepping up to the plate. Foreign Ministers from several European nations are descending on Luxembourg to announce a fresh round of sanctions against the Middle Eastern state. With more here_s Laura Connor. Victoria diplomats say the sanctions will place even heavier constraints on trade banks oil and natural gas imports with exceptions only being made in the case of medicine and other humanitarian aid. Previous rounds of international sanctions have already caused Iran_s currency - the rial- to lose 80 percent of its value since the beginning of this year. Because of this analysts believe Iran will be under insurmountable pressure to scrap its controversial nuclear program. The move is a sign of the many democratic reforms taking effect over there since the country_s current administration took office in 2010. Many of those being released were political prisoners or foreign nationals. Myanmar_s adoption of democratic policies has led to the loosening of sanctions from the international community. He_s accused the media of exaggerating the number of casualties during the conflict. Authorities finally caught up with Karadzic in 2008 where he had been hiding in plain sight for the last 13 years. If convicted of the charges he could face life behind bars. More now from the fallout of last month_s terrorist attack on the American embassy in Libya. The assault killed a US ambassador and has become a hot topic in the US Presidential election. Republican candidate Mitt Romney has been quick to criticize Barack Obama_s foreign policies. On Monday Secretary of State Hilary Clinton deflected some of the blame by taking responsibility for the incident. Clinton went on to say that she didn_t want to get into any blame game and that the focus should now shift to tracking down the terrorists and bringing them to justice. Nevertheless political experts believe the Benghazi attack will dog the Obama administration for the duration of the campaign. Parliament there has voted unanimously to dissolve itself and hold an early general election next January.
